If you are interested in hiking the Inca Trail, you need a permit to enter the trail. Everyone needs permits, including guides and porters, so they do sell out in advance. No matter which inca trail trek you choose: the 4 day, 2 day, 5 day or 7 day, everyone needs a permit - but you only need to worry about availabilty for the start date - once you enter you are good.
For any Alternative Treks to Machu Picchu you can book for any day that is best, no permits are necessary.
