Salkantay Trek to Machu picchu Only Women 7 Days / 6 Nights Marvelous Hiking and Botanical Experience

This trip was fantastic. From exploring the ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, to hiking to Lake Humantay, over the Salkantay Pass and then on to Machu Picchu. Soledad our guide, knows so much about the flora and fauna- pointing out lots of unique local things, as well as very knowledgeable about the local history. The food provided by Noemi (and Paulina) was an excellent- particularly the soups with lunch and dinner and the early birthday cake! I enjoyed hiking with all women as it was about marveling at the world rather than trying to get there fast- often my experience with hiking with men. Highly recommend to others and if you love plants you should ask for Soledad!

Better then expected

I did the 7 day all women’s guided tour with Soledad as our tour guide! There were only 3 women total on the tour so the whole hike felt like a private tour! Soledad provided a flawless experience from the start to finish of each day. She was helpful every step of the way and provided so much history and local knowledge.
Chef Noemi and lady porter Paulina prepared the most beautiful meals and the variety and portions were incredible!! They made popcorn for us every night and even made us a cake! The food preparation was more than I expected! I would do this tour again just to keep eating the delicious meals!
Everything was so easy on this trip! All of the decisions, logistics, meals and planning were taken care of! I was able to just show up and enjoy the week in the Andes and at Matchu Picchu!

An Amazing Experience

My Salkantay Trek was one of the most memorable travel experiences I've ever had, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Hans, and our chef, Wilfredo.

Hans was exceptional from start to finish. His knowledge of the mountains, local history, plants, and wildlife added so much depth to the trek. What made his insights especially meaningful was that he is Quechua, sharing a cultural heritage that traces back to the people of the Inca Empire. Throughout the journey, he brought the landscape to life by explaining the significance of what we were seeing, from native plants and animals to the traditions and history of the region. His passion for his culture and the Andes was evident every step of the way.

Hans also went above and beyond in caring for the group. When I experienced some mild altitude sickness, he checked on me frequently and made sure I was comfortable and recovering. One gesture that I will never forget was when he personally brought me hot soup while I was resting in bed. It was a simple act of kindness that showed how genuinely invested he was in the well-being of his guests.

Wilfredo somehow managed to create incredible meals in the middle of the mountains. Every meal exceeded expectations, both in quality and presentation. After a long day of hiking, we were consistently amazed by what he prepared. The food was not only delicious but also gave us the energy we needed to tackle each day's adventure. It's still hard to believe the variety and quality of meals he was able to produce in such remote locations.

The scenery of the Salkantay Trek is breathtaking, but what made the experience truly special were the people. Hans and Wilfredo went above and beyond to make sure everyone was comfortable, cared for, and able to fully enjoy the journey. I couldn't recommend this trek more highly and would gladly do it again.

We did the 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate with guides Lucio and Denise, and it was the highlight of our trip to Peru. Practical advice first: come prepared for rain. The forecasts were unreliable the whole time we were there — it rained both days, including a downpour halfway through a Machu Picchu tour that was supposed to be clear. These are two long days packed with adventure — an early bus, then a train, then the trail. The logistics of reaching the trailhead are genuinely complex, and having Lucio and Denise handle all of it was worth the price of admission on its own. They set a comfortable pace and shared a steady stream of interesting history, geography, and culture along the way. Lunch was a delicious spread of local cuisine from Urbano and his team — far more variety than I expected from a crew that carried every bit of it up the mountain. We had Wiñay Wayna nearly to ourselves (one other group and a pack of llamas). The rain stayed with us until we walked through the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu opened up below — we stopped right there and swapped rain gear for sunglasses and sunscreen. That approach is absolutely worth the trek, and crowds were light when we arrived at the site. The Alpaca Expeditions hotel in Aguas Calientes was perfect: hot shower, comfortable bed, and our bags waiting safely in the lobby. Day two we headed back up. The group split by language inside the site, which made it much easier to see and hear, and Lucio's depth of knowledge gave me a real understanding of the world Machu Picchu existed in. We finished with a celebratory lunch with our guides, then a smooth ride back to Cusco and a drop-off at our hotel door with our luggage waiting. The AE team are logistics experts. Communication was excellent from booking to final goodbye, and they constantly went above and beyond — including framing perfect shots and taking them on our phones, with no photo package upsell. Highly recommended.

My 5-day Salkantay Trek with Alpaca Expeditions was genuinely one of the best travel experiences of my life. The trek was spectacular from beginning to end — Humantay Lake, crossing Salkantay Pass through every kind of weather imaginable, hiking from the high Andes into the rainforest, and finally reaching Machu Picchu. The scenery was breathtaking, the camps were excellent, the food was fantastic, and everything was incredibly well organized. What truly made the experience, though, were the people. Our guides, Americo and Romario, were outstanding — knowledgeable, funny, encouraging, and always looking after everyone in the group. Somehow Alpaca also brought together an amazing group of strangers who became genuine trekking buddies over those five days. Saying goodbye at the end was honestly difficult! A huge thank you to Americo, Romario, the cooks, porters, drivers, and everyone behind the scenes who made this adventure possible. I came to Peru expecting an incredible trek and left with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and a completely new appreciation for the Andes. If you’re considering Salkantay, I cannot recommend Alpaca Expeditions enough. Absolutely unforgettable. 🇵🇪❤️

4 nights / 5 day Salkantay trek: Had an incredible time on this 5 day tour led by Joyce and Joel. Would recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for amazing scenery, truly great home cooked food, and quality explanations on Inca history. Many thanks to Benedito for making us a great anniversary cake, to Joel for his constant energy and enthusiasm, and to Joyce for sharing his vast knowledge of Peru history! An unforgettable experience, thank you!

I did the Salkantay trek with 3 of my friends. Joel and Joyce were our guides and we had the most amazing time. Everything was well thought through and we felt in really safe hands. Food by chef Benedicto was delicious. Could not fault the tour and would highly recommend to a friend. The company also supports the local communities and hires indigenous guides which is brilliant.

Could have been Disastrous

Visiting Machu Picchu has been a dream of mine since I was a child. My wife and I are both in great shape, had trained hard, came early and felt fully prepared for the trek. Despite all our careful precautions, altitude sickness hit me hard on the very first day. By the time I reached camp, I was exhausted and dehydrated, but I was so deeply grateful for the incredible support of our guides and our wonderful group—we truly had the best group in the world (a special shoutout and thank you again, Jon!). On the morning of the second day, it was determined that for my health and safety, it would be best if I did not continue. While we were sad to say goodbye to our new friends and head back down the mountain, that is when the company truly showed its greatness. Ro Ro arranged for Marcus, one of their fantastic guides (along with a porter), to accompany us back down. What could have been a disappointing turn of events transformed into an unforgettable adventure. Marcus stayed with us for the rest of the trip, becoming not just our guide, but a true friend. We made lifelong memories on this alternative route, and for the outstanding care, flexibility, and kindness we received, we couldn't be more thankful. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned for!

The hike of a lifetime

Unfortunately we were not able to do the traditional Inca trail due to adverse weather conditions. However, the replacement hike and short Inca trail that Alpaca were able create a hike/trail for us at very short notice. I wanted to say an enormous thank you to Sergio and Luis and their team for helping make this trip so special to all of us. The food was incredible and our experience would not have been made possible if it wasn’t for their amazing hospitality. But the biggest thank you can only go to one person. Joyce, you were unbelievable for our entire expedition. You gave us the answer to every question no matter how stupid some of them were. You became part of our family and made the trip perfect for all of us. I know that every single one of us from our group will treasure the memories you brought us for the rest of our lives. Finally I wanted to say, Sulpayki, wawqiykuna panaykuna, kay viajepi kuska purisqanchikrayku. ❤️❤️

An amazing treck to the greatest of the Incan sights.

We had an absolutely amazing treck despite the itinerary being changed due to unprecedented weather. The new route was amazing made all the better by having such a knowledgeable and amazing guide in Joyce who explained all the sites that we wondered through and the history around them. We had some amazing food courtesy of Sergio who cooked amazing food for me and made sure my nut allergy was very well cared for. Thank you for such an amazing time.

Incredible hike with Joyce

I had the pleasure of doing this hike on 22-25th august. Due to weather we ended up not able to do the full Inca trail so alpaca created a new route for us to do, finishing with the short Inca trail. The hike itself was gorgeous, we had great weather and the views were out of this world. What really made the hike was the incredible team we were given. We had 8 porters, a private chef and the most amazing guide, Joyce. The porters are the most awe inspiring people, they do the whole hike, with insanely heavy bags all with a smile on their face. Our team of porters were led by the amazing Luis. I really cannot put into words how incredible they are. I sadly struggle with coeliac disease. This has proved challenging in South America, I was reticent beginning a hike where the risk of me getting sick was potentially high. Man, was I wrong. Our chef, Sergio, was utterly phenomenal. I never once got glutened, he prepared all my food separately and safely. I woke up to breakfasts of crepes filled with chicken and veg and banana pancakes with chocolate (even on the day where we woke up at 4:30am). ALL GLUTEN FREE and with an obvious focus on nutrition needed to provide energy for walking! On the final day Sergio even prepared me a gluten free cake. Genuinely the best, safest food I had all holiday. They handled my food restrictions brilliantly, thank you Sergio. Finally, Joyce. We were all rather emotional when it came time to say final goodbyes. Joyce was smiley, friendly, laughed at our jokes and put up with our music the whole hike. We ended up doing the first day slightly too quick and got to lunch before our porters so he let us do an extra little summit (4372m) which gave us great views. He let us walk at whatever speed we felt comfortable and was so knowledgeable and interesting, I feel I understand Peru and the different cultures so much better as a result of my conversations with Joyce. We will miss group meals and our card games with you Joyce!! All in all, Alpaca organised an amazing expedition with the most amazing team. Memories we will treasure for life. Thank you!

Wonderful Experience

We did the 2 day Inca Trail hike with camping, and had an amazing experience. Jean Carlo (JC) was our guide and he was brilliant. He was super accommodating of a group with different capabilities, explained everything in detail and had great energy and positive attitude throughout the trek. The food was also delicious! It was a truly memorable experience, made better by JC and the wider chef/porter team.

Short Inka Trail - Camping

Had a blast, the views were amazing and Machu Picchu exceeded its reputation. Jean Carlo was an excellent tour guide. Will be recommending this exact trip to my siblings who want to see Machu Picchu.

2 day Inca trail experience

Herlin was our guide for the two day Inca trail hike. He was exceptionally patient and friendly, as we had some people in the group who were slower or struggling on steep parts of the trail. He was very flexible and accommodating when we fell behind the expected pace, and was positive. I’d love to do another hike with Herlin in the future!
