Important Booking Tips!

Why Book the Inca Trail in Advance?

The Inca Trail is an ancient network of stone-paved paths built by the Incas more than 500 years ago. Much of the route still preserves its original stonework and passes through impressive archaeological sites, often described as “mini Machu Picchus” because of their beauty and historical significance.

This world-famous trail is located within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, a protected natural and archaeological area managed by the Peruvian government. The archaeological heritage is protected by the Ministry of Culture, while SERNANP (National Service of Protected Natural Areas) is responsible for preserving the park’s unique ecosystem.

To protect this extraordinary heritage, access to the Inca Trail is strictly regulated. Only 500 people are allowed to begin the trek each day, and approximately 300 of those permits are reserved for support staff, including porters, guides, and cooks. This means that only 200 permits are available for hikers each day.

The Inca Trail is open from March 1 through January 31 of the following year, including weekends and public holidays. However, it is closed throughout the entire month of February due to the rainy season. During this closure, park authorities carry out maintenance work on the trail, bridges, and campsites.

For this reason, we recommend booking the Inca Trail 3 to 5 months in advance. Many travelers reserve up to one year ahead, as permits for the following year are typically released in October.

Booking Early Allows You To:

  • Secure your preferred travel dates.
  • Guarantee your official Inca Trail permit.
  • Enjoy the best campsites available along the route.
  • Plan your trip with confidence without worrying about permit availability.

What Do I Need to Book the Inca Trail?

The Classic Inca Trail covers 45 kilometers (26 miles). The trek begins at Kilometer 82 of the railway and ends on the fourth day when you arrive at Machu Picchu through the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

The highest point of the trail reaches 4,215 meters (13,828 feet) above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains. Along the journey, you’ll discover remarkable archaeological sites, experience an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, and learn about the history, geography, and culture of the ancient Inca Empire.

You do not need to be an experienced trekker to complete the Inca Trail. It is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and an adventurous spirit. During the expedition, you’ll spend three nights camping, enjoying one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences in the world.

To Reserve Your Space, You Simply Need To:

  1. Complete the Book Now form or our reservation form.
  2. Provide your personal information exactly as it appears on your passport:
    • Full name
    • Passport number
    • Nationality
    • Date of birth
    • Gender
  3. Pay a US$200 deposit per person.

Once we receive your reservation form and deposit, we will take care of securing all the official permits for both the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

Your only job is to prepare for the adventure. We recommend hiking regularly, going to the gym, or doing other physical activities before your trip. It is also advisable to arrive in Cusco 2 to 3 days before your trek to properly acclimatize to the altitude.

What If I Don’t Have My New Passport Yet?

No problem at all.

You can book your Inca Trail using your current passport, an expired passport, or even your driver’s license as temporary identification. Once you receive your new passport, simply send us the new passport number, and we’ll update your permit information.

Important:
Only the passport number can be changed after the reservation has been made. Names and surnames cannot be modified once the permit has been issued.

At Alpaca Expeditions, we have many years of experience organizing Inca Trail tours, and our team will handle every step of the permit process so you can focus on enjoying your adventure.

Why Is the Inca Trail a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience?

The Inca Trail is widely regarded as one of the greatest trekking routes in the world. Walking along an original stone path built by the Incas centuries ago is an unforgettable experience that combines history, nature, adventure, and culture like nowhere else on Earth.

Throughout the trek, you’ll visit several remarkable archaeological sites that very few visitors to Peru ever get to see. Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll learn about the history, architecture, engineering, and legacy of the Inca civilization. Along the way, you’ll also encounter an incredible variety of native plants, orchids, birds, and wildlife found within the Andean cloud forest.

Spending three nights camping inside the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, surrounded by towering mountains and a sky filled with stars, makes this journey even more extraordinary.

The most unforgettable moment comes on the fourth morning, when you reach Machu Picchu on foot through the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku)—the same entrance used by the Incas centuries ago. Watching the Lost City of the Incas slowly emerge before you at sunrise is a privilege reserved exclusively for those who hike the Inca Trail.

At Alpaca Expeditions, we are proud to have one of Peru’s most experienced and professional Inca Trail teams. Our expert guides, talented chefs, and dedicated porters are passionate about delivering exceptional service and ensuring that your Inca Trail adventure becomes one of the most memorable experiences of your lifetime.

Discover Your Perfect Alternative Trek

Explore Salkantay, Lares, Rainbow Mountain & More

Alternative Treks, like Salkantay, Lares, Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain, and Choquequirao, are hiking tours that travel on historic footpaths that are not the Classic Inca Trail. As a result, they are less crowded, have more booking flexibility and availability, and do not require trail permits. They still end up at Machu Picchu, but not via hiking directly into the UNESCO mountaintop citadel. Not sure how all these treks compare to each other? Check out Which Trek is Right For Me.

Best Inca trail alternatives

  • Salkantay Trek
After the Classic Inca Trail, this is the most well-known alternative tour. The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu will be a challenge to complete, but you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Salkantay mountain and Humantay lake. This tour is open to all travel enthusiasts without restrictions.
  • Lares Trek
If you enjoy culture, this journey is for you. During your tour, you will be able to interact with native Andean villages, which keep their traditions and have not altered much in the last 500 years.
  • Choquequirao Trek
Choquequirao, considered the most difficult excursion in the Cusco region, is an excellent choice for those interested in cloud forests, vegetation, and fauna. The Choquequirao complex is located at 3,050 meters above sea level and provides an alternative for people who have already visited Machu Picchu.

Excellent Sacred Valley Guide – David Condori Villanueva

We had an excellent experience with David Condori Villanueva, our guide for the Sacred Valley tour organized by Alpaca Expeditions.

David was extremely knowledgeable about Inca history and did an outstanding job of explaining the historical significance of the sites we visited as well as the many interesting features we might otherwise have missed. His explanations added greatly to our understanding and appreciation of the Sacred Valley.

He managed the full-day tour very efficiently, making excellent use of our time while never making us feel rushed. He was patient and thorough in answering our many questions throughout the day.

An added bonus was David’s skill with photography. He took some wonderful photos and videos of our group at the various sites, giving us great memories to bring home from the experience.

David is knowledgeable, personable, attentive, and very professional. We thoroughly enjoyed our day with him and would highly recommend him to anyone taking a Sacred Valley tour with Alpaca Expeditions.

An Unforgettable Trip with Exceptional Service

We were really impressed by how wonderfully organized everything was by Rolando and Carlos. They were always there exactly where we needed them, whether at the Ollantaytambo train station or the bus transfer location in Cusco. They are incredibly professional and truly take care of everyone throughout the trip.

We also learned so much from them. They shared fascinating stories and information about the history, nature, and everything we were seeing along the way, which made the experience even more enjoyable and meaningful.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the trip and truly appreciate all the wonderful service and care you have provided. Thank you very much, Rolando and Carlos, for making this such a memorable experience!

We had a wonderful time with Juan visiting the Inca sites in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Juan is very knowledgeable about the history and prehistory of the Inca civilization. He also knew all the best spots for pictures! We really appreciated his expertise.

In general: What an experience! Great guides, chefs, and porters. Alpaca Expeditions is a green company that pays close attention to their carbon footprint, sources their food locally, and has various programs that give back to their community. Bonus: they have a portable toilet that is well maintained and stocked with TP at all times. My personal experience: This is long, but hopefully helpful if you have any reservations about whether you can accomplish this trek! I arrived in Cuzco to acclimate 3 days early…however, I unfortunately succumbed to the altitude on day one of the actual hike and got worse on day 2 and 3. It is not lost on me that I was ONLY able to complete the trek because of the Alpaca team. The chef team, led by Cecilio, were very accommodating to my needs and prepared different teas to try to help me. Our groups guides, Alvin and Yojhan, were beyond encouraging and made sure I was safe the whole time. One of them was always with me even though I took twice as long as the rest of the group. >_< I can’t stress enough how important it is to have the right team supporting you in any situation. Their company’s back bone is stellar, but their actions during the hike showed me their heart is unbeatable.

I recently completed the 4-day Inca Trail with Alpaca Expeditions alongside my teenage daughters, and it exceeded every expectation. The weather was perfect all four days, which made the stunning views even better. Our guides, Yojhan and Alvin, were true experts, sharing deep insights into Incan history, the wildlife, and the flora and fauna of the area. They were incredibly patient and answered every question we had about Peru and more. From the start, they encouraged us to keep smiles on our faces and told us we’d become a "super family" by the end—and that is exactly what happened. The "super porters" worked tirelessly, and our chef Cecilio and his assistant cooked incredible meals for us along the way. Everything went perfectly to plan, and we finished the expedition with celebratory toasts and a shared album for photos with our new friends. I cannot recommend this team highly enough!

Muy buena experiencia con Alvin y Yojhan haciendo el camino Inka clásico. La comida que nos hizo Cecilio y Angelito estaba impresionante. Repetiría seguro!

The 4 day Inca trip was the best trip i have had in my lifetime. Beyond the scenic scenery everything has been well planned through. Alvin and Yohan were there for any possible inquries and shared a lot of nice insights along the inca trail. The food was better than any regular meal you can grab in town and was served three times a day by the amazing chef Cecilo and his crew. If you don’t do this trip you miss out.
