Alternative Treks, like Salkantay, Lares, Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain, and Choquequirao, are hiking tours that travel on historic footpaths that are not the Classic Inca Trail. As a result, they are less crowded, have more booking flexibility and availability, and do not require trail permits. They still end up at Machu Picchu, but not via hiking directly into the UNESCO mountaintop citadel. Not sure how all these treks compare to each other? Check out Which Trek is Right For Me
If there are no Inca Trail permits for your ideal dates, we highly recommend you explore our alternative treks, or book a year out.

Beautiful trek, delicious foods, and kind guides
Wonderful experience. Our guide Fernando was very knowledgeable about the area and answered all of our questions thoroughly. He also was able to modify our itinerary based on the physical abilities of my family. Marcelino was an amazing chef and baked a cake for my parents' anniversary. Crisostomo was kind and a wonderful addition to our trip in helping serve as Marcelino's assistant.
2 day / 1 night Machu Picchu trek
We had a wonderful experience on our short 2day/1ight Inca trek with camping. Valentin, our tour guide, was excellent. He paced the group excellently, gave us clear guidance on how the days would go and answered all questions.
The food was a real highlight, many thanks to Soledad for her hard work.
Thanks to our porters too who made our journey so enjoyable by having everything set up when we arrived at camp especially providing added comforts like hot water on arrival to the camp site. It was much needed! 💕🇵🇪
An Unforgettable Inca Trail Experience
We had an unforgettable experience on the 4-day, 3-night Inca Trail. It was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Peru.
A huge thank you to our main guide, Saul G., who was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and passionate throughout the entire trek. His understanding of Inca history, culture, and archaeology was outstanding, and he always took the time to explain everything in an engaging and interesting way. On top of that, he has a great sense of humor and created such a fun and positive atmosphere for the whole group, making every day even more enjoyable.
We also want to thank Humberto, our assistant guide, who was always kind, supportive, and encouraging. Together, they made an amazing team and ensured that everyone felt safe, motivated, and well taken care of from start to finish.
A big thank you as well to the incredible porters and the chef, whose hard work, delicious meals, and constant smiles made this journey even more special.
We couldn't have asked for a better team. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Peru!
Once in a lifetime experience highly recommend
Once in a lifetime experience. Our guides Alvin and Johan were fantastic and very knowledgeable about all of the Inka sites and culture. The guide Alvin really made us all feel like family. Food by the chef Armando was delicious and catered to my dietary requirements with no problems. Big thank you to the porters as well for carrying extra clothing and all of the tents/ bedding for the trip. The tour ended walking through the sun gate and into Maccu Picchu which was truly amazing plus then a guided tour through the site before a final lunch in town and train ride to Ollantaytambo. The Alpaca team was wonderfully organised and I would recommend this experience highly to everyone.
Incredible trek through the Andes to Machu Picchu
Had an amazing time in the Andes visiting archeological sites along the inca trail! The mountain views were breath taking and I didn't want to trip to end. Food was very good and everything was very well organized and ready promptly.
