A breathtaking experience.
We embarked on our 7 day and 6 night Salkantay and Inca Trail trek with Alpaca Expeditions at the beginning of July led by Brandon and his incredible team. The experience was breathtaking - not only did the diverse beauty of the landscape and the extraordinary views from above take one's breath away but so did the altitude and the thin air at our maximum height of 5 200m above sea level.
An enjoyable and challenging trek ending with a visit to Machu Picchu.
Our tour operator, Alpaca Expeditions was professional, responsive, transparent and accommodating from beginning to end. A special mention of Brandon, our guide, German, our cook and Wilber and his team of porters - they made our adventure thrilling, entertaining and comfortable.
Visiting Machu Picchu was bitter sweet, stepping onto this ancient land surrounded by magnificent beauty yet knowing that the adventure is now at an end.
A huge and heartfelt thank you to Alpaca Expeditions and to Brandon and his team for a wonderful adventure and life long memories.
Amazing trek to Choquequirao
While the trek was challenging, Alpaca Expeditions went out of its way to ensure an outstanding experience: horses took our gear, two chefs cooked amazing meals every day, their staff set-up/took down our tents, and our guide Brandon shared his knowledge freely about the geography, ruins, and Inca culture in general
Life changing experience
I didn’t know what to expect going into this trip as I had never done anything like this before, but this company exceeded anything I could have ever expected.
Alvin and David were our guides, and I couldn’t be more grateful for them. Their kindness, intelligence, humor, and care left a lasting mark on me. When someone in our group got sick, they both took turns checking on them throughout the evening, bringing them tea and broth to help their stomach. Alvin made me laugh more than I had in months, and David’s calm, kind demeanor was the perfect counter. Alvin said that at the end of the trek we would be a family and I truly felt that, as cliche as it sounds. It was like saying goodbye to two friends at the end of everything, and it honestly brought me to tears.
The food was amazing, especially when you see how humble the kitchens in the dining rooms are. I’m a very picky eater and there was nothing I couldn’t eat and nothing I didn’t enjoy. We were given three hearty meals a day along with dessert after dinner. Each meal was filling and fueled me for the long days ahead.
I have no complaints about the accommodations- each day was no less than 13 miles (according to my smartwatch) so for me, a bed is a bed. I did find the night at the glass dome to be exceptionally cold, but that was my own fault for not renting the sleeping bags that Alpaca offers (I heard theirs were very warm- mine was a cheap packable one from Amazon).
I had never done a hike like this before, and am not an overly active person (I’m fit and hike casually, but nothing more than 10 miles prior to this), but I was able to complete the trek without any issues. Day two, which is the highest point, was definitely physically taxing, but taking it slow helped a lot- I found the (optional) hike up to Humantay Lake on day one to be much harder for whatever reason.
There was a couple in our group from the Netherlands who were disgustingly entitled and rude to Alvin and other guides/staff, refusing to tip and more (I’d be here all day if I detailed every example of their abhorrent behavior)- they were the only bad part about this trip. I truly don’t know why they were complaining as everything moved according to what was outlined in the pre-departure meeting- and any other minor random little hiccups should have been chalked up to the nature of life- things happen. Everything we did they had something negative or sarcastic to say. I think they expected a boujee influencer style experience where everyone treats you like you’re the most important person in the room and that’s just not the case (nor should it be). I wanted to include this paragraph incase they leave a review, because anything they say is coming from a place of ignorance.
If you read this far, I cannot recommend this company and this trek enough. Thank you again Alpaca, and thank you Alvin and David, for making this trip so special.
Gorgeous Hike of choquequirao
Our tour guide, Brandon, was amazing, and he consistently ensured everyone had a great experience. The trek to choquequirao was 5 days, and was comfortable and included tents, great food, amazing sights, and a fun experience. The hike was difficult but very worth it to see an ancient city that is not very packed and has a lot of history. There were only around 6 people + guide in the group and felt very personal and safe.
Amazing Inca Trail Adventure
We had an amazing time on our Inca trail trek with Alpaca Expeditions. Our guides Saul G and Melinton were top of the line, making the experience safe, fun, and unforgettable from start to finish. Our chef Germán prepared wonderful meals along the entire trip, even somehow baking a farewell cake on our third night to celebrate. Our group of porters worked tirelessly to ensure all of our belongings were seamlessly transported from one campsite to the next…it’s hard to believe how hard all of these amazing people work! If you’re considering visiting Peru with a trip to Machu Picchu, don’t hesitate to take the Inca trail to get there…and don’t hesitate to book with the team at Alpaca Expeditions! The Andes have a magic to them that’s hard to describe without experiencing it first hand. Thank you to Saul G, Melinton, chef Germán, and our team of amazing porters for creating an unforgettable experience for us. Absolutely recommend this amazing adventure!
