Only 500 trekking permits are issued per day for Inca Trail treks annually; Inca Trail permits are also required for your travel team such as porters, cooks, and guides; therefore, booking the Inca Trail in advance is essential. because there are multiple needs, to take care of, there is no set amount of time in advance that you must book and guarantee an Inca Trail to Machu Picchu entrance ticket.

The Inca Trail is a world-famous hiking trail that leads to the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru. The trail is about 26 miles (42 kilometers) long, and it takes four days to hike from start to finish.

If you’re planning on hiking the Inca Trail, it’s important to have a good map. There are plenty of resources available online and in stores, but we’ve found that the best way to get a feel for the trail is to use an Inca Trail hikers map.
This map was created by an Alpaca Expeditions hiker who has completed the trail and provides detailed information on the different sections of the trail. It also includes recommendations on where to stop along the way and what to see.

We’ve detailed our own Inca Trail plan below, and this is the type of itinerary you may expect (note that this only applies to the days spent hiking, not the days spent traveling to/from Cusco and Ollantaytambo).

Day 1: In the morning, go from Ollantaytambo to km.82 and climb to the campground.
Distance: Approx. 8.7 miles/ 14 km
Elevation: 3,300 metres/10829 ft
Difficulty: Moderate dificult day.

Day 2: Early start to hike through cloud forest, up to Dead Woman’s Pass, and back down.
Distance: Approx. 7.5 miles/ 12km
Elevation: 3,600 metres / 11800 ft
Difficulty: Challenging day.

Day 3: Early rise to hike the most photogenic section of the Trail.
Distance: Approx. 9.9 miles/ 16 km
Elevation: 3,680 metres / 8792 ft
Difficulty: Moderate.

Day 4: Early morning (3 a.m.) departure to reach the entry checkpoint and hike for 1-2 hours to the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu.
Distance: Approx. 3.1 miles/ 5 km
Difficulty: You’re halfway at Machu Picchu, and you should be hopping, skipping, and jumping your way there!

Please know that if you are booking with a passport that is set to expire within 06 months of your planned entry date to Peru, you will be required to renew your passport before coming to Peru. Peru authorities will not grant you entry to the country otherwise.

If you are booking your trek with us, and this is your case, please know you will be able to book with us to secure your Inca Trail permits and tickets to Machu Picchu. However, you will be required to renew your passport and update your passport details with us prior to your trip to Peru. Failure to do so may result in the forfeiture of your reserved permits, and tickets to Machu Picchu.

If you want to book the Inca Trail online, there are a few things you need to know. First, you need to make sure that you have a valid passport and that your travel dates are confirmed. Second, you need to choose an authorized tour operator. Only authorized tour operators are allowed to sell tickets for the Inca Trail.

If you have booked the Inca Trail and need to cancel for any reason, it is important to know that the tickets are nonrefundable. This means that you will not be able to get a refund for any reason, including if you are unable to make the trip or if the weather is bad.
Inca Trail permits are 100 percent non-refundable and non-transferable. Permits are issued in the name and with the passport number of the trekker and cannot be transferred to anyone else, under any circumstances.

There is no clear answer to this issue since the optimum time of year to climb the Inca Route depends on a variety of variables including as weather, trail closures, and personal preferences. However, the dry season (May-September) is often regarded as the ideal time to trek the Inca Trail since there is less possibility of rain and mud. Hikers should also be advised that the Inca Trail is closed for repair on February every year, so plan your adventure.

Assuming you are in reasonably good shape and are carrying a light daypack, it will take the average person 4-5 days to hike the Inca Trail. Of course, this is highly dependent on your fitness level, how much you rest along the way to enjoy the scenery, and other factors.
If you want to take your time to enjoy the experience, allow 5-6 days. This will also give you a buffer in case of bad weather or other delays.
