Machu Picchu Trip Is an Experience to Remember

If visiting Machu Picchu is not on your bucket list, then it is time you add it. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In the recent times, thousands of people hike through Machu Picchu every year just to see the sun set over the towering stone monuments and wonder at the mysterious magnificence of one of the world’s most famous wonders.

The Natural Wonders of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is tucked away in the rugged countryside northwest of Cusco, Peru. It is thought to have been a holy religious site or royal estate for Inca leaders. The site stretches over a 5-mile distance, and it features over 3,000 stones steps that link its many different levels. If you dream of making a trip to this wonder of the world, then here is what you need to know:

You have many choices for where to base your trip to Machu Picchu. However, the most popular are Cusco, Aguas Calientes, and Ollantaytambo. Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu and is the place where you board a bus that will take you to the site. Ollantaytambo is a good starting point if you like to trek, but even if you plan on taking a train to the top of Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo is one of the oldest continuously occupied buildings in South America and so it is worth visiting the fascinating ruins.

Cusco is located 50 miles from Aguas Calientes. It is the most significant town in the region, and possibly the most common place that people stay. The great thing is that you can access Machu Picchu by train or bus thus making one-day trips possible. The city is full of ancient art and history, including Andean baroque, the Incan Palace (which stands side by side in Cusco’s stone streets), the church of Santo Domingo (neighboring the Plaza De Armas), and The Qoriacancha. There are more than 160 hotels available in Cusco where you can choose to spend a night or two.
